Are you our new colleague?

Do you want to help strengthen the Seamen's Home as a visible player in an active harbour town in Greenland? Are you enterprising, persistent and good at building and maintaining relationships? And do you want to be part of life in a hotel where you lead the diaconal and spiritual work to make a positive difference for people in the town?

Then you might be our new seafarer missionary in Ilulissat, Greenland's third largest city with a rich cultural and natural life. Your new workplace will be the Seamen's Home and Hotel SØMA, a 22-room breakfast hotel with a view of the Icefjord.

You will be part of a staff of 2-4 other employees (depending on the season) who work together to run the hotel. Your role as a deacon is to provide Christian welfare work for fishermen, hunters and sailors who visit the harbour in Ilulissat.

Your tasks:

  • Seafarer mission, including daily ship visits, visits to the dinghy harbour, visits to port affiliates, visits to trawlers, cruise mission, etc.
  • Diaconal activities that relate to the people staying at the harbour and in the city, such as visits to the prison and vulnerable citizens - as well as festive activities in connection with Christmas and Easter.
  • Organising morning devotions at the hotel in collaboration with the hotel manager.
  • Development of diaconal, evangelising and social activities independently and in collaboration with the regional leader, other seafarer missionaries in Greenland and Denmark.
  • Management of and sparring with any volunteers.
  • Maintain and strengthen contact with the local church and other city institutions.
  • Weekly operational shifts at the hotel, as well as weekend shifts and filling in for the hotel manager when he is on holiday.

We expect you to:

  • Is loyal, spiritually mature and has the courage to live and work in Ilulissat for several years.
  • Are self-disciplined, prayerful and persistent because you understand that work is done in long term stretches.
  • You meet people at eye level and with an open mind, because you are sociable and sociable and good at seeking out and building relationships.
  • Good at planning and getting things started - and equally good at implementing initiatives and persevering when it can sometimes be hard to see the fruits of your labour.
  • Will be actively involved in the life and operation of the hotel, also as a spiritual counsellor and sparring partner for the other hotel management.
